Seaton Community Centre has gone through Asset Transfer from Durham County Council. Asset transfer involves the transferring of assets, owned by the County Council, to local communities and organisations.
Without asset transfer many community facilities would close. Under community control vital facilities and services are allowed to thrive and improve what they offer to local people.
Seaton Community Association has taken over the running and management of the Community Centre. They are responsible for the day to day running of the building and all repairs and maintenance.
The Centre is run by a group of dedicated volunteers and provides a wide range of activities for local residents. The Centre had two rooms available for hire and has full kitchen facilities.
The Centre is looking for new members so if you are interested in joining or would just like some further information please contact Mrs Lewis on 0191 5815316.
History
Seaton Village School 1865 – 1938
In 1860 a Sunday Evening Service was held in the temporary school, taught by Robert Turnbull, the Parish Clerk at Seaton. In 1865 the schoolroom at Seaton was built. Before this there was no such building in the parish and the school at Seaton was taught in an old barn. In terms of numbers the school was the smallest in County Durham and one of the smallest in the country.
The present building was erected at a cost of £160 which (with the exception of a grant of £20 from the Diocesan School Society and a like one from the Trustees of Greatham Hospital) was nearly all contributed by the inhabitants of the township of Seaton, either in money, materials or carting. The site was given by the Reverend John Cundhill B.D. of St Margarets, Durham.
After serving the village for 77 years, the school closed in 1938. Formerly the school had up to 70 pupils, but when it closed only 1 pupil remained on the roll. On closure of the school, Miss Sarah Crabb, the Head Mistress for 16 years planted 3 sycamore trees on a plot of grass outside the school, one for each of the last 3 pupils of the school.
Following closure of the school the building was used as a church and Sunday school, and on weekdays a church hall.
